A piece of music that I love: “Rill Rill” by Sleigh Bells
I love the layers of “Rill Rill.” The song samples Funkadelic’s “Can You Get to That.” The guitar part has a great sound and I love the flow of the chords being played. “Rill Rill” is a pop song, but the funk sample elevates the music and pushes the boundaries of the genre. The percussion layers in the song keep things busy and bassy, which is something that I love. I love getting deep into a listening experience using some form of loud surround sound. Hearing multiple layers that build on each other really adds to the experience of a song. The syncopated rhythms make the track busy in an entrancing way, so that I can’t help but pay attention and groove in my seat when I hear it. The sugary vocals add to the song’s brightness and danceability. The smooth alliteration and rhyme in the lyrics make the track fun and catchy. Sleigh Bells tend to be geniuses when it comes to the formulating noise, something that is seen throughout their production.
A piece of music that I hate: “Robbery” by Juice WRLD
Most of what I dislike about “Robbery” are elements of the production. If I saw the music and the lyrics on paper, I would not have as many critiques. The melody itself is not bad, consisting of a simple piano riff. If I heard the piano on its own, I would not dislike it. What I don’t like is Juice WRLD’s style. His voice, the level of autotune, and the way he mumbles some of the verses and yells others, just do not provide a pleasant listening experience for me. The beat on the song feels generic, and I don’t find any ear-catching rhythms. The way the track is composed, layered, and produced feels generic and does not strike me as good music.
